A personal reflection on starting estradiol hormone therapy and restoring emotional resonance, connection, and vitality during perimenopause and menopause.
When Estradiol Woke Me Back Up: Restoring Emotional Resonance Through Hormone Therapy
A reflection from The Alchemista
There’s a moment I didn’t expect when I started the estradiol patch.
Not fireworks.
Not instant bliss.
But a quiet re-inhabiting of myself.
Only a few days after putting on my first patch, I felt like a dormant room in my body had been unlocked, one I didn’t even realize had gone dark.
For years, maybe close to a decade, I was functioning: capable, successful, loving. But honestly, I was also moving through the world a little hollow. Present, but muted. That changed within days of starting on estradiol.
Estradiol didn’t change who I am.
It restored access to my emotional resonance.
Emotions Came Back Online
One of the first things I noticed after starting estradiol hormone therapy was emotional fullness.
Not instability. Not overwhelm.
But depth.
I cry at movies again, not because I know they’re sad, but because something lands differently.
I feel the swell in my chest when someone I love walks into the room. I feel tenderness and connection more deeply.
My emotions are closer to the surface now; they feel integrated, not fragile or overwhelming.
I feel less like a shell of myself.
More here.
Tears That Move Instead of Staying Stuck
Tears come more readily now, both joy and frustration, and they move through me instead of getting trapped.
I feel relief in that.
Before, everything felt flattened. Like my emotions were wrapped in plastic, visible but unreachable. I wasn’t completely numb, but I also wasn’t fully feeling. It was a blank emotional emptiness that’s hard to name unless you’ve lived it.
Now, when something hurts, it hurts honestly.
And when something is beautiful, it lands deeply.
The world hurts me right now. That’s true.
But the richness of my emotional life with the people I love, my friends, my chosen family, my intimates, is unparalleled. That emotional resonance is profoundly enriching, and I would never trade it for numbness again.
This is what estrogen gave back to me:
access.
Access to grief and gratitude.
Access to vulnerability and resilience.
Access to the full spectrum of being human.
Why Estrogen Restores Emotional Resonance (The Science)
Estrogen, specifically estradiol, is not just a reproductive hormone. It is a neuromodulator, meaning it directly affects how the brain processes emotion, connection, and meaning.
Estradiol influences:
Serotonin and dopamine pathways, shaping mood, motivation, and pleasure
Oxytocin signaling, deepening bonding and emotional attunement
The limbic system and amygdala, which govern emotional intensity and interpretation
Neuroplasticity, supporting emotional flexibility rather than numbness or rigidity
When estrogen levels decline, many women experience more than hot flashes or low libido. They experience a loss of emotional resonance: joy dulls, sadness flattens, and connection can feel distant or inaccessible.
Restoring estradiol doesn’t create emotion.
It restores the brain’s capacity to feel it fully.
For me, it felt like my nervous system exhaled and said,
“Oh. There you are.”
Less Numb. More Alive
Estradiol didn’t make me “too emotional,” as women are often warned.
It made me human again.
Colors feel brighter. Music feels richer. Relationships feel embodied instead of theoretical. There’s a softness that returned, and it’s paired with strength. The kind that comes from presence instead of pushing through.
I didn’t realize how much energy it took, how draining it felt, to live slightly disconnected from myself until that disconnection was repaired.
Balance Matters
For me, hormone optimization is not about excess or over doing it. It’s about harmony.
Estrogen forever for me! Paired with progesterone, of course, for balance, grounding, and uterine protection.
This is about choosing to live awake rather than muted.
Feeling rather than floating.
Being moved by life instead of buffered from it.
That, to me, is real vitality.
From the Alchemista
As a clinician, I understand the science of hormone therapy.
As a woman, I understand the lived experience.
Hormone optimization doesn’t just treat symptoms.
It restores how we inhabit our lives.
Sometimes healing isn’t becoming someone new.
It’s reclaiming the parts of yourself that quietly went offline.
This Is Only the Beginning
What feels especially meaningful to me is this: this is only my first month on estradiol.
What I’m experiencing now is not a finish line, it’s an opening.
Hormone balance is not instantaneous. It’s a conversation between body, brain, and time. Receptors are waking up. Systems are recalibrating. My physiology is remembering what equilibrium feels like.
I’m deeply aware that more transformation may unfold as I continue toward full balance, thoughtfully, intentionally, and with expert guidance. I’m grateful to be navigating this process with the support of my clinician, Diana Greenia, APRN whose partnership and clinical insight make this journey both safe and expansive.
This first month has already restored emotional resonance I didn’t realize I had lost. I can only imagine what becomes possible as balance deepens.
I am not chasing perfection. I am listening, adjusting, and allowing my body to come back into harmony, layer by layer.
And I’m just getting started.
